For many Veterans, coming home is the start of a different kind of war. In some cases, it feels like they are at war with themselves. They struggle to find jobs, reintegrate to “normal” life and resources can be bleak. They face obstacles like PTSD and depression, which can leave them feeling unsure of what tomorrow may bring and if they have the energy to face it.

At POM, we are thankful for the Veterans, Seniors & Human Services levy (VSHSL), in partnership with King County, that “connects servicemembers and veterans, residents age 55 or older, and resilient communities to programs and services that help them live healthy, productive and meaningful lives. It helps individuals and families transition to affordable housing, get job training, find employment, receive behavioral health treatment, and more.”

This levy helps us connect with clients like Joe. Joe, who has been living in his car for quite some time, has received gas assistance from POM to help keep him warm. Through a variety of connections with our VSHS levy, Joe was introduced to a potential job opportunity. And wouldn’t you know, it was the perfect fit. The manager needed a night time security guard and Joe needed a safe place to park and a little extra cash.

Our case manager said, ‘I love how the Veteran Navigators meet their clients where they are”. You see Joe, wasn’t ready for an apartment and didn’t feel comfortable in a shelter. This is why, at POM, we feel that case management isn’t a one size fits all. We try our best to adjust to each person’s unique needs, while upholding their dignity and freedom of choice.

Today, we honor Joe and so many like him, and want to know you don’t have to walk through this alone. If you or someone you know is a Veteran, who is struggling to answer the “what’s next”, please reach out to POM and setup a case management appointment. You’ve done so much for this country, let us give back to you.
