We are hiring for an: English as a Second Language Teacher

JOB DESCRIPTION                                                               

 Plateau Outreach Ministries (POM) provides social services to people in the area of southeast King/ northeast Pierce Counties commonly known as the (Enumclaw) Plateau.

Overview:  POM’s ESL program fits perfectly within POM’s vision of “A plateau where every family, every person, thrives in a community of love and support.” Individuals for whom language is a barrier in everyday life often struggle to thrive. Learning basic English skills helps people make progress in achieving their potential. Removing the barrier of language allows people to better understand American systems like school, medical, and government, allowing them to advocate for themselves and their children and families. Learning English at a more advanced level opens doors for higher education and better paying jobs. POM’s classes provide a safe, stress free environment where students are permitted to learn at their own pace.   The ESL teacher must have the heart and compassion for Plateau Outreach Ministries Mission and Values along with the wellbeing of our clients, volunteers, and community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Participate in development and implementation of POM’s ESL program.

·         Design and implement comprehensive lesson plans aligned with individual student needs.

·         Teach all aspects of English language skills including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading comprehension, writing mechanics, and conversation.

·         Provide constructive feedback to students to promote language development.

·         Maintain a positive and supportive classroom environment that encourages participation and active learning.

·         Manage classroom dynamics effectively to address diverse student needs.

·         Demonstrate sensitivity to different cultures and adapt teaching strategies to accommodate diverse backgrounds. 

·         Maintain an open communication method with students (examples: WhatsApp group, Group Text, or Facebook group)

·         Guide and direct the work of volunteers including the facilitation of small group conversations.

·         Track POM monthly data to include:

1. Student attendance and progress

2. Volunteer hours

3. Teacher’s timesheet

·         Take on additional duties as assigned by management.

·         This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

 Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Strong understanding of English grammar and vocabulary

  • Knowledge of ESL teaching methodologies and best practices

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs

  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Classroom management skills

  • Must agree to and pass the WA State Patrol and/ or a federal background check

 Preferred Skills and Qualifications

·         Experience in teaching English as a second language.

·         ESL teaching certification (TEFL, TESOL) 

·         Bilingual (preferred Spanish)

    • Being bilingual provides an understanding of the unique challenges of navigating daily activities in a non-native language. This helps the students identify with the teacher, which builds confidence and facilitates progress.

 Expectations and Salary

The expectation is that this position will require up to 10 hours a week.  The hourly rate of pay will be between $20-$22 an hour depending on teacher’s qualifications.
